This is a known incompatibility between certain versions of Microsoft PowerPoint and OSX Mavericks.The solution is to install the latest Microsoft Office updates. Please submit a ticket here, and we can install the update remotely.
All of the teacher laptops imaged in the fall of 2014 will have this problem. As of 11/1/2014, Most of them have been updated, but there are a few that still need attention. The problem is fixed in the next release of the teacher image.
As a workaround, you can always upload your .ppt file to your Google Drive account and view it in Google Slides.
